Volunteer Opportunity

The Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife will be holding a March 24th training session in Eugene for volunteers who would like to become instructors for its Angler and Aquatic Education Program.  The program provides "an opportunity for folks who love fishing to share their passion with others".  The program teaches angling skills, angler ethics and responsibilities, water safety and basic aquatic ecology so volunteer can teach these important aspects to children and adults during Angling Events around the state and particularly in the Eugene area.  We currently have 3 events scheduled for April and May of his year.  Volunteer instructors, who must be at least 21 years old, will learn how best to share their fishing expertise with others.

If you are interested in attending this FREE training session, contact Chris Willard at (503) 947-6017 or e-mail him at: chris.a.willard@state.or.us

LUNCH IS PROVIDED TO ALL PARTICIPANTS!

Feel free to pass this message to anyone who may be interested.

ODFW has partnered with the USFS and received grant money to purchase materials to construct 2 portable stream simulator tables.  These tables are hands-on educational tools to help students understand watershed functioning.  The tables will be available for loan to schools and groups throughout the Eugene-Springfield area as well as the Coast Fork Willamette, Middle Fork Willamette and McKenzie River basins to teach about watershed processes.

The tables are basically a box filled with sand and a pump to circulate water through an artificial stream.  Students are encouraged to alter various aspects of the stream (for example, install narrow PVC pipe to simulate an undersized culvert, add sticks/rocks to simulate fish habitat, straighten channels etc) and watch the response.  By building two tables and adding them to the 5 the USFS plans to build, we hope to make these tables available to a large audience to increase watershed awareness.

Local USFS employee Ernie Ledbetter designed the tables and is willing to provide any guidance necessary.  He provided the plans and constructed the ones in the photos.

ODFW will purchase all necessary materials, but I am looking for volunteers with tools to construct the tables.  I have until June 30 of this year to spend the money.  Although construction doesn't necessarily need to be completed at that time, I would prefer it that way...

The Plexiglas box on top of the wooden box will be prefabricated at MultiCraft Plastic and made available to volunteers for installation.  Volunteers would be asked to build the wooden box, complete the plumbing etc to make the system functional and do all the finish work (sanding, painting etc).

The two photos of the nearly complete box took Ernie Ledbetter approximately 21 hours to get to that point.  My assumption is he would be faster than most given his experience with building these.  He figures he has another 6 hours of work before the project is complete.  I have that sample available for a couple of weeks if you wanted to take a look.  (I expect I could get it again if necessary.)  The word doc with picture is a full size table (only half is visible) showing how the tables are actually used.

Let me know your thoughts.  Thanks for your consideration.
