Presidents Message     Gabe O’Campo

Well, some of our members have already begun catching fall Chinook.  I have even heard of a nice legal Coho taken on the Umpqua.  I can hardly wait for the opportunity to get out and wet a line.  I plan on trolling spinners early in the season, and bobber fishing bait later in October.  But in light of some reason events, I ask that all of our members take the time to be safe on our local rivers.  We have had a number of accidents on our local rivers.  The majority of these events could have been avoided if people had been wearing life jackets.  I know that they can be uncomfortable, and hot.  But with the newer designs in vests, and floatation collars these excuses don’t hold up for long.  I know of several members that have gone over the side of the boat in fighting fish, setting the hook, or just a shift in weight in the boat.  So please as our friend Bill Barrett always says, "We want to hear from you, not about you".

By the way, I hope that you had the chance to see the picture in the Register Guard on Thursday Sept. 22 of an 88lb. Chinook taken in Alaska this past summer.  Now that was one very big fish.

We have yet to fill the Ticket coordinator position so we are loosing lots of time that we should be selling Association tickets.  We have plenty of people that could assist someone in this endeavor.  So please think about this, and if you can help out, let me or one of the board members know.

Our Speaker this month will be Eric Vonarx of Aqua-Scents.  He will be introducing us to a product called Fish Tickle.  It is a water activated product that releases scent.  I am looking forward to seeing how this product works.

Do you have an idea about a topic that you would like to learn more about?  Do you know someone that you think would make an interesting speaker?  Then by all means, let me, or Gary Lutman know your idea.  Gary usually sets up our speakers; so let him know if you have a topic or a speaker in mind.  The more topics that we can bring to our membership, the more interest we might be able bring to our meetings.

Hope to see you at the next meeting on October 5, at the Eagle Aerie.
