November 2006 PRESIDENTS MESSAGE Gabe O’Campo Well what about them Cougars, gotta love them boys from Washington State. We have lots of things going on lately, but not lots of fishing. Rather I should say lots of fishing, but not lots of catching. I am at a loss to explain why we see tons of fish rolling but not lots biting. I keep holding out for that one big rain that is going to turn the bite on. My fear is that once it rains, these fish will catch the next wave upriver and be gone. I as a matter of principle will not fish above tidewater. So once they get up out of the tidewater, I leave them to the business of spawning. So I hope that I can find a couple of fish down low that are willing to take bait.
We have lots of fish that have been clipped at Letz Creek and are getting ready to go into the pond. I want to thank all the volunteers that log so many hours taking care of that facility and the fish we raise. Al Bazzi, Doug Dewald, Gary Lutman, Cindy Heller, and all the daily feeders that put in the miles, and the time to make sure that our investment in the future is ready to swim out to sea. It is an investment that we make for our future fishing, and the future of our children’s angling experience.
I want to thank Chris Douglas for the effort he put into a member fish along the weekend of the 21st and 22nd of October. Again the fishing was not so good, but the opportunity to fish with someone new was worth the effort. So thanks Doogie, keep it up, and sooner or later, you’ll get those fish to bite.
As I write this, we still do not have a guest speaker for November. But we do have a fabulous speaker planned for February. Bob Toman will be coming down to speak about Salmon Fishing. He is far and away one of the most methodical anglers that you will ever meet. He plans everything down the smallest detail. It will be exciting to listen to him talk about the details of catching fish. So mark your calendars so that you do not miss this one.
Please keep in mind the offer that Curt Currey has on the table for all of our members. If you purchase an entire book of raffle tickets for twenty bucks, your name will be entered into a drawing to fish with him for just about everything that swims in Oregon. I would be a day trip of your choice on the river of your choice. If we could get every one in the chapter to buy just one book, our raffle sales for the year would be over. We would not need to hound you for time at GI Joes, or anywhere else. Remember that half of every dollar comes back into our chapter. It is one of the major fundraisers for the Association. So please come in this next meeting and make this a shorter raffle ticket sale for us.
Hope to see you all in November, same bat time, same bat channel.
Gabe O’Campo
