March 2007 PRESIDENTS MESSAGE Gabe O'Campo
I want to invite you all to our next meeting on March 7th. We have Dean Finnerty of Five Rivers Guide Service joining us for the evening. He will be speaking on fly-fishing for Steelhead. We were all thrilled to have had Bob Toman come in last month and do a fine job with his presentation. Also special thanks to Ike Icanberry for his very generous donation to our door prize table last month.
We have had some fish sighted in the main stem of the Siuslaw at the entrance to Letz creek, and so we expect that some fish may be coming on into Letz creek soon. The spell of rain that we have had this past weekend has probably brought more fish into the Siuslaw basin. We usually expect to see fish (natives and other wise) in the rivers through the month of March.
I want to thank Doug Dewald and Al Bazzi for the enormous amounts of time and effort that they donate to our chapter. If you get the chance to get out to the hatchery and take a look at all of their handy work, please do. Also, I want to thank the guides that participated in our Valentine’s Day Radio Auction. We were very successful this year in part because of the trips that were donated and also because of the efforts of Tim Foxx, Bill Barrett and Tracy Berry. The one other thanks here goes out to Mark Seghetti of Steelheaders West. His very generous donation of rod and reel combo’s for all the high bidders really helped get our bids up this year. All of these funds will be greatly appreciated in the continuing operation of our facility out at Letz Creek.
One of the benefits of living in this area is that we almost always have a run of fish in the rivers, or one on the way. We have winter steelhead present in our local rivers with the promise of big 5 salt spring Chinook on the way. I can hardly wait to hear that we have salmon in the Willamette and McKenzie systems. It sure makes these days of lousy weather easier to take when I know that good fishing is available when the rivers drop back into shape.
Lastly, thanks go out to Chris Douglas. He like many of our members is juggling a job, a family, and some stuff that he does for the chapter along with the occasional fishing trip. He did an excellent job getting us into the Sportsman show. Rounding up some out standing volunteers for that weekend and taking it all down on Superbowl Sunday.
Thanks to all of you that put in some time out at the Boat show. Ask Chris “Doogie” about that fish that he got to hold when he fished with Monty Wills of Chinook Winds guide service. Nice fish dude… Hope to see you all out for our next meeting. Same Bat time, Same Bat Station…
