July 2005 PRESIDENTS MESSAGE Gabe O'Campo Back when it looked like we were going to have a really bad season for Spring Chinook I had said to Jim Conway that all I really wanted was two Springers. So as things go, on the Sunday morning of Memorial Day, I went out fishing with Mark Seghetti of Steelheaders West. We arrived at the Curry Hole on the McKenzie River about five o'clock, and to our surprise we found it empty. One other boat was at the ramp and so we parked the truck and went out and rowed up to the Curry Hole and asked if we could anchor next to this fella and fish. Right off the bat, this young man hooks two fish and looses them both at the net. Well it didn't take him long to hook number three. Landed that fish, and he goes on to hook number four. He hands that one off to me, and we land that one. Then he hooks number five, hands that one to Mark, and we land that one. Still no one else in the hole. Ryan Harrington, the guy next to us, watches me hook and land my second and he goes on to hook his second on the very next cast. We missed a couple of takedowns. So all and all we hooked 11 and landed 5. I got my two salmon for the season, and I am pretty happy to have them. Thanks to Ryan for his generosity. Some times you do get what you ask for. This is just another example of how we can get along on the river with other anglers. Too often we hear about conflict on the river. People being rude and fishing right through the water that another boat is anchored in. We see boats completely disregard what ought to be another boats right of way. I see this a lot when there are clients in the offending boat. Just because they paid money to be in that boat does not give the oarsman right to cut other boats off or plug the drift that someone else is fishing.
I want to thank all of you that participated in this years Big Brother Big Sister event. I have heard nothing but great things about this event. I very rarely get sick, but that was the weekend that I finally did. I had the worst sore throat and was running a fever, so I thought it best to stay home. I heard that it came off as smooth as silk. Thanks to Captain Spatula, aka Mike Blackmarr, for once again having tremendous food ready for breakfast and lunch. I heard stories of this one child that must have had hollow legs being as he must have put away a quarter of his weight in breakfast sausage. Mike Troutman reported that the kid in his boat could not thank him enough for getting her into fish. Gary Lutman made some kids week by getting him into several limits of trout. Doogie Douglas finally got the skunk off this year, and even Doogie's boat got fish. Thanks again to everyone who made it out there. A special thanks Curt Currey and his Dad, Don. These are the guys that really made this thing happen. The hours spent planning and getting things together, the execution of that planning and it all comes off so very well. Thanks again gentlemen. We also need to thank the guys from the Forest Service. Ray Rivera, and Dave Bickford go above and beyond the call of duty for these kids every year. They had fishing rods and reels for every kid out there, cameras and other really cool stuff. Well it turns out that they are paying for these things out of their own pockets. We must be talking about some hundred dollars each out of pocket. So thanks guys, with out you, this would not be nearly the event that it is every year.
I also want to thank all the great people that came out to the work party on June 18th. A lot of really needed stuff got done out at Letz Creek. We are blessed with an ample supply of water this year, so we have less to worry about once we start to fill the pond and put fish into it. Again I want to remind all of you that our awards barbeque is going to be August 13th. So please mark your calendars for Saturday August 13th. Dinner will be earlier in the day also. I think Al Bazzi said that dinner would be at five o'clock this year so that they would have more time to clean up afterwards. Let see, lets have the A-M last names bring a side dish to go with the excellent barbecued chicken. So something like beans, salads, etc. The last names N-Z can bring dessert. Please no chips please. This way we don't have thirty plus bags of chips and nothing to go with dinner. We also appreciate it if you please leave pets at home. It ends up being quite the circus if we have lots of dogs around the tables and cooking areas. By the time you get this newsletter, we will have had another terrific Sturgeon outing on the Columbia. I hope that all those anglers attending that event have fish to bring home. See you at the Eagles lodge July 6th. I have not yet heard who the speaker will be.
See you then. Gabe O'Campo
