April 2006 PRESIDENTS MESSAGE Gabe O'Campo
Let me begin by thanking all of you for this opportunity to serve as your chapter president for another term. I really enjoy this club, and this is my way of contributing to keeping it going. All of us can find some way of contributing to this chapter. It could be holding an office, or going out to feed fish. It might be helping out at a work party, or by helping to cook burgers at an outing. The important thing is to get involved. We want to see some of our new members stay on as long term members. We have added some 120 new members in the current membership drive. You probably have until the beginning of May to get any of your friends into the chapter at the lower membership rate. Bring a friend, or relative along to the next meeting. This way, they can think about becoming a new member also.
We have information in this newsletter about the chapter scholarship which can be awarded to students of current members. As our family faces this formidable task of paying for college, we really understand the concept that every little bit helps.
By the time that you have received this newsletter, we will have attended the Association Awards Banquet and Auction. This is always such a fun evening in Portland. It is an opportunity to meet with Steelheaders from across the state, but many of the finest guides in Oregon, Washington, and Alaska. It is also a chance to bid on some wonderful items and have all the proceeds go to running this organization for another year.
We also have on our calendar a date scheduled on April 8th, at our local G.I.Joe’s. It is a sportman’s day where local sports clubs can let the community learn more about them. We will be there, so if you want to see a little more of the things that we do, come on by.
At our April meeting we will probably begin planning the Big Brother Big Sister fish along that is set for June 10th. It is a fabulous event that our members look forward to every year. It is a chance for some local kids to spend the day out on the water, and maybe even catch that fish ever trout. It is so interesting to see all the different techniques that go into catching the stocked trout. One boat two years caught three limits in no time flat using floating bait soaked in Shrimp oil.
So there, now you have the secret technique. Everything this guy put in the water had shrimp oil on it. I don’t think he ever hit the bottom before some poor trout inhaled his bait. Come on out, bring the boat, and show a kid how you catch fish. It is something that they will never forget. You could come out and help cook breakfast or lunch for the group. Every little bit helps.
Our speaker for April will be Jeff Ziller from ODFW. He will be able to answer some of our questions about the projected springer run on the Willamette and McKenzie rivers this spring. He is a very informative speaker, so please make plans to join us.
Lastly I wanted to share this thought with ya’ll. Recently I had a chance to float the river with a friend who I rarely get to fish with in the winter. We both work, and so it was quite a treat to have the chance to get out on a March morning to chase steelhead. We hooked three but they didn’t stay hooked. But it was still fun going out with a guy that I have enjoyed fishing with for years. So thanks Bill, I really treasure the chance to spend some time on the water with you. Hey, the next chance you get to appreciate one of your fishing buddies you should. We all have such a limited time on this float trip of life, so appreciate those close to you when you have the chance.
See you all in April. Same time, same place. 7:00pm at the Eagles Lodge.
Gabe O’ Campo
